Barn & Vine: The Process of the Phoenixville Project Part I / by Tara Tayan

Barn & Vine: The Lost Path to Rural Phoenixville

Last June the Historical Society of Phoenixville approached me with an opportunity to photograph the “open spaces” in nature for Phoenixville and the surrounding countryside.  Such an open-ended assignment excited me because of the freedom in direction it offered, but the vagueness of the assignment made it hard to know where to start.  Over the course of the project I realized that these open spaces in nature could be derived from three places, parks, farms, and abandonment.  Thus, Barn & Vine: The Lost Path to Rural Phoenixville came to being.

Public Parks

After doing a little Internet research I realized that the area had an abundance of public parks.  This seemed liked the perfect place to start looking for the open spaces I had been assigned to capture because it is an area preserved as nature for everyone to enjoy.  Also, being public parks, they are easy to find and explore. Take a look!

This was an early morning view from an old railroad track that runs over the trail and river.
